SUNY Poly Professor Dr. James Castracane will discuss breast cancer metastasis at the July 19 Summer Science Series Lecture. The talk will cover the development and use of a novel microdevice, the NANIVID, to attract and capture metastatic breast cancer cells. The main goal is to discover what causes a certain subset of cells to break away from the main tumor and invade the circulatory system and spread throughout the body. Using SUNY Poly's state-of-the-art fabrication facilities, the NANIVID is created through wafer level processing with dimensions of 3 x 1.5 x 0.15 mm and inserted directly into a tumor. The subsequent release of chemoattractants begins the process which is imaged in real-time with single cell resolution. Analysis of the captured cells is focused on discovering the biochemical signaling that causes migration with the hope of developing treatments to stop the spread.

This event is free and open to the general public.
